[Press] Calling Jayantha Dhanapala a liar, or the tragedy of Lankan public life

On March 16, 2014, Colombo Telegraph, a UK-based online news outlet published an article entitled ‘Jayantha Dhanapala Is A Liar; Caught Lying Over Silence On Colombo Telegraph Blocking’. This article was a follow-up of an earlier article on the failure of Ambassador Jayantha Dhanapala, a member of the Board of Directors of Dialog Axiata PLC, one of Sri Lanka’s premier telecommunications service providers, to prevent Colombo Telegraph from being blocked by that company in Sri Lanka. These articles were followed by a third follow-up piece published on 27 March 2014, with photographic evidence that Colombo Telegraph continues to be blocked. The third article described Dialog as being ‘surreptitious’ in blocking access to the online newspaper, unblocking the site before Dhanapala delivered a speech at public forum organised by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), and re-blocking it soon after. In the relative aftermath of this outright accusation of Ambassador Dhanapala as a liar, this article attempts at rethinking the issue, in the backdrop of the broader picture of challenges to the free press in Sri Lanka.

#Palestine solidarity lunch with my girls. This is what I like about #feileanphobail #feile2018 there’s a really genuine sense of solidarity here, and despite the gap between the lived experience of the Troubles in #Ireland and the hugely destructive magnitude of the plight of the #Palestinian people, there is a sense of understanding. #solidarity, in the times we live in, is extremely important and vital for our collective survival. #belfast #feile #ireland #palestine #pride #queer #pride2018 #feile2018 #lka #westBelfast #belfast #peacebuilding #fightAgainstInjustice #JusticeForPalestine
#Pride in #Belfast with Cllr Deirdre Hargey, the Lord Mayor of Belfast. #Pride is Northern Ireland’s biggest parade, and public support yesterday was overwhelming. #belfastpride2018 #queer #lesbian #pride #transrights #womeninpolitics #womeninleadership #ni #ireland #ulster #belfast #yesequality #reprojustice #trustwomen #thenorthisnext #transpolitics #transfeminist #genderjustice #advocacy #publicpolicy #intersectionaljustice #representationmatters✊🏾 #lka
It was a great pleasure to meet Dr Victoria McCloud (Master McCloud), Master of the Senior Courts, Queen’s Bench Division. Dr McCloud is also a chartered psychologist and an academic. At a time when a wave of #misogyny (or to be precise #Transmisogyny) has made strides in Great Britain, the presence of Dr McCloud in the higher echelons of the #Judiciary is hugely symbolic and empowering. Hers is also an example of the possibility of working hard, and making things happen without a high level of fanfare, which is something that should provide good food for for thought to all of us involved in gender justice advocacy. #genderjustice #pride2018 #transrights #womensrights #womenintheJudiciary #womenintheAcademy #transfeminist #transfeministPolitics #transRights #fightagainstinjustice✊🏿 #lka #ireland #uk #northernIreland #pride #belfast #nofilters #queer #chamindraweerawardhana

It is very important to support campaigns to #decolonize #museums and for that matter, #archival repositories of many Western European countries. These are places that hold valuable material stolen from governments and peoples in the global south/s. There should never be an issue for a country to claim ownership of what is rightfully theirs, especially when the objects in question are part of national heritage and were stolen with the stealth of colonial power. Western colonisers do not own, and have absolutely no ownership rights over what they stole from other countries. High time they came to terms with this reality and returned all such stolen treasures to their rightful owners. #returnstolentreasures #colonization #decolonizemuseums #decolonialpraxis #decolonialpolitics #racialjustice #geopolitics #lka #Ethiopia #nigeria and all other countries concerned.
The #alternativeQueerUlster event held last night at the great hall of the #Stormont parliament buildings was a necessary event, that helped highlight the problems of exclusion in lgbt+ activism in Ulster and beyond. The speakers were great. The point made by the last speaker, Electra la Cunt, that queer folk are in no way obliged to engage with mainstream whitestream homophobic, transphobic media, was crucial. In my talk, I asked how come i happened to be the only brown face in the great hall...and called out the racially exclusionary practices and racialised hiérarchies in lgbtqi+ activism, in #NorthernIreland and elsewhere. I also called out how apparently ‘progressive’ political parties are oftentimes only interested in their political advantage, and for that purpose, are willing to tokenise and exploit #poc #qtbipoc and all other minorities. In this sense, I said, it’s easier to deal with the #DUP (we #srilankans love them anyways don’t we!) and the likes of #trump because the s***e is out there for the world to see, rather than being sugarcoated in a shabby (il)liberal (non)discourse of being pro this and pro that. This is a vital conversation that needs to continue, and this is only a small starting point. I also felt that towards the end of my talk, the cis white woman holding a timekeeping bell was inclined to ring her bell harder, something she did not do in the same way with other speakers (if she felt uneasy re what I said, that’s the goal reached!) The problems involved were clear on the spot. After my talk. A white woman came to me and asked “so where are you studying”? So the only brown person in the room had to be a “student” (as in, a brown body that has shit to learn from the global North, right?). So here’s where we are at. There’s no path forward without challenging these stereotypes. #blm #lka #queer #norniron #belfast #belfastpride #ireland #altqueerulster #qtbipoc #transpolitics #marshapjohnson #stonewallwasariot #representationmatters
